Welcome!
In 2012 LHRA made international news
when we transported, housed and provided care for 46 of the 60 horses taken from a Thoroughbred breeding operation in Many,
Louisiana. While this media attention brought awareness to our organization it is important to know that we perform
similar rescue tasks on a smaller scale throughout the year.
Horse neglect is a national epidemic
due in part to economic swell followed by economic decline. In additon to saving horses, we are developing programs in the
hopes of accomplishing the following:
- Educate new owners on the cost and methods of responsible horse care
- Educate
law enforcement agencies and animal control officers on how to assess a horse neglect case
- Bring awareness to communities
about horse neglect and abuse law
- Work with breed organizations to implement minimum standards of care
LHRA IS A 501(c)3 DESIGNATED PUBLIC CHARITY OPERATING UNDER THE GUIDELINES OF THE AAEP.
Louisiana Horse Rescue Assocation is dedicated to the rescue,
rehabilitation, retraining and placement of horses of racing breeds. The organization is funded solely on donations and private fundraising activities. LHRA houses approximately 20 horses at one time. In 2011 we rescued more than 35 horses and placed 29. We receive many requests for rescue, and evaluate each one carefully.
